August Shining Star: Celebrating Our Very Own Christy!

Each month, we pause to celebrate the heart and soul of Karl's Canine Krew: our dedicated volunteers. These incredible people are the driving force behind every adoption, every happy ending, and every life saved. For August 2025, we are so excited to shine a bright spotlight on a truly special member of our pack, Christy!

Christy

A Journey Paved with Love

Christy has been a foster parent for about four years, dedicating her time and home to dogs from two different rescues. Her journey into fostering began from a place of love and loss. About four months after the passing of her beloved yellow lab, Roxie, Christy wanted to ease back into having a dog around. Fostering became her way to heal and to honor Roxie's memory by helping other dogs in need.

This path isn't always easy. Christy shares that the hardest part of fostering is the waiting game—waiting for that perfect forever home to come along. It’s a feeling many fosters know well. The knowledge that so many dogs are out there needing a safe place to land makes the wait feel even longer.

Yet, for Christy, the reward far outweighs the challenge. "The best part of fostering," she says, "is saving the dog from being euthanized and giving the dog the best chance at a new life." This powerful motivation is at the core of everything she does. It's what keeps her opening her heart and home, again and again, to dogs who have nowhere else to turn.

More Than a Foster Mom

A Colorado native, Christy was born in La Junta and moved to Colorado Springs back in 1979. She’s built a beautiful life here, and has been married to her husband, Tony Caldwell, for 32 years. Together, they experienced the ultimate foster reward: a "foster fail" named Rowdy!

Rowdy is a testament to the special bonds that form in a foster home. He's a very good sport with all the new foster dogs that come and go, acting as a furry mentor and companion. According to Christy, Rowdy even misses the dogs when they leave for their forever homes, a sweet reminder of the connections they all make.

When she isn't busy caring for foster pups, Christy enjoys going to concerts, traveling, and spending quality time with her family and friends. While most of her adult life has been in clerical jobs, her true passion is clear. "I wish I could just work at a doggy daycare, or have my own in-home pet sitting business," she shares. "For now, I will continue to help save dogs."

An Inspiration to the Pack

Christy’s dedication is a source of immense inspiration for the entire Krew. She embodies the resilience, compassion, and unwavering hope that defines animal rescue. Her story shows that you can turn personal loss into a powerful force for good, creating a legacy of kindness that touches countless lives.

We are so incredibly grateful for Christy. Her commitment provides a critical lifeline for dogs at risk, giving them the safety, love, and time they need to find their happily ever after. She is a true hero in every sense of the word.

You Can Be a Star, Too

Christy’s story proves that one person can make a world of difference. If you've been moved by her journey, we encourage you to consider getting involved. Fostering is one of the most impactful ways to help, but there are many roles to fill—from volunteering at events to helping with transport.

Please join us in giving a huge round of applause to Christy, our August 2025 Shining Star of the Pack! Thank you, Christy, for your compassion, your dedication, and for being such a vital part of our mission to save lives.
